Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
