New research suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
